The Best Hidden Cafe and Bar in Helsinki

I’ve lived in Helsinki for two and a half years, yet somehow only ventured to this cafe and bar last weekend. I’d seen the sign to the cafe many times but never quite made it to the seaside location. Set off a winding path through construction sites, it’s a decent walk to the cafe- but worth every step.

Here are some photos of Ihana Kahvila (Finnish for wonderful coffee) and the neighbouring bar Damascuito- set up in two old rusted and graffitied boats. Below the images are some directions on how to reach the cafe.

To get there

One option is to walk from the Sörnäinen district along Parrukatu to the walking track next to the Helen power station. This will take you to the street Parrulaitur which leads to the beautiful island of Mustikkamaa- well worth a visit in itself. About 500m before you reach the bridge to Mustikkamaa, at the start of Sompasaari, you’ll see a sign pointing to the cafe. Follow this for around 1km until you reach the cafe.

Alternatively, jump off the metro at Kalasatama and walk along Arielinkatu until you reach the junction with Parrulaituri. Again, follow the signs for about 1km.
