Helsinki’s best second-hand and eco-friendly stores

Not too long ago I loved to buy new and expensive household items which would sting my wallet and eventually end up in landfill. These days I have a much more minimalist approach to possessions and when I do buy things I love the challenge of finding pre-loved items in thrift stores, second-hand markets and giveaways.

Here are some of my favourite eco-friendly stores in Helsinki.

The recycle centre- Kierrätyskeskus

Located in the Kyläsaari area of the Hermanni district this huge two story center has amazing bargains- from books to glassware and kitchen utensils, clothing, craft supplies and furniture. The prices are cheaper than you’ll find elsewhere in Helsinki and the range is also extensive. I especially love looking for abandoned treasures in the two large sheds at the front of the building, which house free items.

Fida Roba

In the popular street Iso Roobertinkatu in Helsinki’s design district Punavuori, this second hand store has a huge range of amazing and well priced vintage clothes, shoes, books and glassware.

This chain store has a great range of second-hand clothes at good prices and they regularly have 50% off the entire store.

Another second hand clothing chain with many stores throughout the city. They regularly have sale weeks where everyday is a slightly different bargain deal. The store with the best range of clothing, especially vintage, is in Fredrikinkatu in Punavuori.

This gorgeous cafe also houses a beautiful second-hand market where people rent booth space to sell no longer wanted clothes. There’s also a section for homewares and Finnish coffee table books.

A chain store selling all types of health food and an amazing range of eco-friendly beauty and household products.

A slightly smaller chain again with health food and beauty/household products. I love the one in Hakaniemi.
