Exploring Helsinki by tram lines

One of my goals for 2018 is to cut down on long-distance travel and explore more of Finland and Helsinki. While my favourite way to explore is normally to wander on foot, the winter temperatures in Helsinki are now frequently below -15*. So I’ve decided to use the tram network as a cheap way to explore whilst not returning home frost-bitten. This method also provides me with inspiration on where to explore as I plan to venture to a different neighbourhood each weekend, working my way through the tram lines. Because I love lists and plans, I’ve jotted down 10 neighbourhoods to explore, based on the tram network below. Each weekend I’ll upload some photos and discoveries of that weekend’s destination 🙂

1. Kumpula & Käpylä – wooden houses and ‘garden city movement’

2. Pasila – residential & commercial hub.. indoor bouldering!

3. Merisata & Eira – waterfront walks, parks, expensive and sought-after old apartments built in Jugend style

4. Munkkiniemi & Seurasaari –  peninsula & island popular for outdoor activities & open air museum

5. Katajanokka – elegant art nouveau buildings

6. Punavuori – Trendy ‘design district’, full of arty shops & cafes

7. Kruununhaka – stately buildings, vintage shops, University buildings, Senate Square & Helsinki Cathedral

8. Hietaniemi – what the Finns call ‘a beach’

9. Ruoholahti & Jätkäsaari – harbour areas

10. Ullanlinna – observatory (+ park),  Design Museum & Museum of Finnish Architecture.
