On a recent trip to Belgium, we based ourselves in Ghent, which made a quick train ride to Bruges an idyllic day trip. The capital of West Flanders is smaller than Ghent (with less than half the population), but in my opinion even more charming, and best explored by meandering on foot.
There’s a plethora of museums and galleries to visit, including one showcasing Da Vinci’s inventions. And of course a never-ending supply of churches and cathedrals to wonder at.
After a good deal of wondering we stopped at 2be (The Beer Wall), which not only has a killer view and vantage point over the canals, but also an extensive array of beers (16 on tap) which can be easily sampled with their 4 beer taster option. At 10 euro this is a bargain, as it also includes 3 mini salty snacks.
